Description
Nitrazepam 5mg Tablets are used for the short-term treatment of severe insomnia, particularly when sleep disturbances are persistent, disabling, or causing significant distress. They help you fall asleep more easily and improve sleep duration.
Each tablet contains nitrazepam (5mg), a benzodiazepine that works by calming brain activity, producing a sedative effect that promotes sleep.

Nitrazepam is suitable for short-term use only and should be taken under medical supervision due to the risk of dependence.
Do not use if:
- You are allergic to nitrazepam or other benzodiazepines
- You have severe breathing problems
- You have sleep apnoea
- You have severe liver disease
- You have myasthenia gravis
- You are breastfeeding

Before starting treatment, you should discuss your medical history with a healthcare professional, especially if you have a history of substance misuse, depression, or respiratory conditions.
Nitrazepam can cause dependence, even with short-term use. Therefore, treatment duration should be limited.
Dosage:
Adults:
- Usually 5mg–10mg taken at bedtime
Older adults:
- A lower dose (e.g. 2.5mg–5mg) is recommended
Method: Oral use
Take immediately before going to bed. Always take the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time.
Important warnings:
- Treatment is usually limited to a few days to 2 weeks (maximum 4 weeks including tapering)
- Do not exceed the recommended dose
- Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine
- Do not take an extra dose during the same night
- Do not stop suddenly after prolonged use; reduce dose gradually
Nitrazepam may cause next-day drowsiness, particularly if you do not get a full night’s sleep.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding:
- Should only be used during pregnancy if advised by a doctor
- Do not use while breastfeeding
Driving and operating machinery:
This medicine may impair your ability to drive or operate machinery.
It is an offence to drive if this medicine affects your ability. However, you would not be committing an offence if:
- It was prescribed for a medical condition
- You followed the instructions provided
- It did not affect your ability to drive safely
Side effects:
Like all medicines, nitrazepam can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.
Seek immediate medical attention if you notice:
- Difficulty breathing
- Severe drowsiness or unresponsiveness
- Swelling of the face, lips, or throat
Common side effects include:
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Poor coordination
- Fatigue
Less common but more serious effects may include:
- Memory problems
- Mood changes such as agitation or depression
- Dependence or withdrawal symptoms
- Breathing difficulties
Interactions:
Nitrazepam can interact with other medicines. For example:
- Opioid painkillers
- Antidepressants
- Antipsychotics
- Sedatives or sleeping tablets
- Alcohol
These combinations can increase the risk of severe sedation and breathing problems.
